Nutritional Planning

Nutritional planning doesn't have to be overwhelming when you have the guidelines set forth from the USDA's Food Pyramid and the My Plate for guides.

In the page Healthy Survival Foods you will find the current requirements and handy links for meal planning and for calculating long term storage options.

Spelled out for you also is a 28 day portion pattern for servings. Taking the necessary foods as a priority and planning accordingly will help you get a handle on what may be needed for 28 days to 3 months to 1 year or longer.
*
Also, included in the page's info are handy links for calorie intake according to your age, weight, gender and activity level as well as a link to specific food calorie and serving portion recommendations.
*
The image shown represents a balanced meal. In this meal you have the needed veggies, protein servings, and grain (pasta). Add to this a serving of dairy in the form of milk, cheese, or yogurt, and a serving of fruit. Meals like this can be made from your storage easily.
*
A healthy diet can be stored and maintained with the correct requirements loaded in it. Stored foods don't have to be bland or tasteless. Choose your favorites and work from there. The only limit in your food prep is your own creativity.
*
See to your family's requirements and get the ball rolling.
*
It's easier than you think!

Practice Emergency Drills!

Using a fire drill as a model for a quick evacuation plan for your family, place the event in perspective. We need to think about who needs to be involved. Appoint older children to buddy with younger ones or to be in charge of pets. Schedule a family meeting to discuss the drill with the older children that are not going to be frightened by the subject. A four year-old may not understand the concept where a 13 year old will. Take care not to unnerve the youngest members of you family with these discussions. Put your escape plan on paper and talk about what to do and how to get out in the event of a fire, flood, or any situation that requires you to leave your home.

Some folks reaction to food storage is thinking they have to buy 300 pounds of wheat and sit on it for 20 years.

We have to select and consume a balanced diet the best we can no matter what.

Though man cannot live on bread alone it is a large portion of what we need to set aside.

Choosing a nutritionally balanced diet in times of additional stress will adequately supply the body's defense and energy systems with proper nutrients from healthy grains, vegetables, fruits, proteins, and dairy items.

Using the USDA's guidelines to build an adequate storage for nutritionally balanced meals, our preparedness goals can be locked down with a set of pre-determined portion servings and sizes within each group.

Using the maximum serving sizes and portions figure what you want to add based on the number of family members, time goal, and specific calorie needs per day.

A helpful nutritional calculator link will help determine what your personal needs are for your daily diet.

A food calorie calculator link is shared for the calorie counts in the food you are consuming.

The page, Healthy Survival Foods, also details the needs for a day and a 28 day month for a single person's storage needs.

Tips on home production and preserving methods is included as well.

Recycle and Be Frugal

To take certain measures against a time which might require 72 hour kits or a store of dry foods for a long period, you might want to consider what you are potentially up against. On a small scale the common crisis in our country is unemployment and a home foreclosure. Granted if the money is not there for a mortgage payment how can it supply the needs of an emergency plan?

For water storage consider recycling plastic containers. Sterilize and fill them with water from a trusted filter source. The water machines in town run about 25 cents a gallon at the moment. Pinch pennies the best you can to get those extra bags of rice, flour, or beans, pasta, cans of tuna. Even simple gathering is better than having nothing at all.

Extreme Food and Survival Storage

Picture
We talk about all these supplies you gather, preppers and survivalists alike. It's a mountain of tools and goods if you want to get extreme and pack a two year contingency plan to full and ready to go. My question is.. How are you going to pull all of that with you if you have to leave your home?

I have a friend that is very proud of all of the survival gear they have accumulated. I still don't understand how it's going to help if they leave it behind. A small weekend camping trip almost filled two cars BEFORE the ice chest and camp food went in.

Plan ahead clearly.

Test your bug out kit for function and weight. Can you can carry it for a long walk or hike if you had to? I have chosen smaller, lightweight items to pack in my survival bag so that I may have more room for the really important goods. My priority? Supporting my nutritional needs.

Storing For Winter

4/16/2012

I work in an industry that is seasonal. When winter rolls around we are at our lowest income for the year. Having a few goodies and supplies set aside for this is a way to make ends meet when paychecks are barely meeting our needs.

By budgeting throughout the money season, so to speak I am able to be prepared for the lean times which unfortunately is around the time of year when we really want to be spending money, namely holidays!

Preparedness doesn't just include emergency kits and food storage. It relates also to household goods.

Try stocking up in several ways. Buy extra sundries (toiletries) through out the year as well as other items needed to run your home efficiently, i.e. cleaning products and basic paper staples.

For example:
Keep a storage of 3-5 bottles each of shampoo and conditioner in a file box. In this box place extra bath soap, tooth paste, and razors. Hair spray and other cosmetic items store at least 2 of.

A prudent reserve isn't strictly money in a savings account. It is also foods and house-hold goods.

Twitter, Google+, Facebook, Pinterest, Stumbleupon in these places I am lost at the moment. All these applications. Trying to get them set up baffles me sometimes. Like preparedness would a new comer.

And there is so much out there on survival readiness I am sure if I hadn't been into the preparedness stuff as long as I have I would be lost in the set up. Where would I start?

I am thinking back to my days in a hurricane prone city.

When we first moved to Florida it was really beautiful. We were not aware at the time of the storm season in the late spring. We had moved in October 1987 after the hurricane season had ended. Imagine moving from a desert to a tropic zone. Thankfully when hurricane season rolled around we didn't have to dig very far for information. There were survival guides available at the supermarket and every where we went it seemed. They had lists of survival supplies and suggestions to help us get through a serious storm.
We learned from our friends and neighbors how to throw a hurricane party! You had to make the best of it. If the storm was bad enough it could mean a serious calamity was on your doorstep.

Life's crisis aren't always storms. No matter the bad occasion, make it work by getting prepared. In a hurricane area you are aware a disaster is on it's way. The technology that is used to track storms these days is top notch. You can follow it through it's entire wake, if you are not in the center target area. The only thing these tracker's can't tell you is how badly your home and family might be affected by it.
If only all emergencies and crisis could be tracked like hurricanes. We might be in better shape if we had a little bit of a warning. Don't wait for the warning signs. Get going on your Survival Recovery!

    Preparedness 1 2 3

Creating a food storage and survival recovery plan takes a little research, some idea of what to plan for and a little guidance from someone who has been there, done that. What we have here is for a beginning prepper or a budding survivalist.

There is a lot of information on the subject but what they forget to tell you is how they got started!

This is where you can begin. By breaking down the basics into easy to understand terms and directions, you can assemble the necessities as quickly as your budget will allow. Take your time and carefully consider what you need to target first.

I would suggest a first aid kit and a 72 hour kit. From there, the page on grains would be a good step in the food storage area for your survival recovery plan.
